PRESIDENT: RELOCATION OF ADMINISTRATION CENTER NEEDS CONSIDERATION
Palangkaraya, Indonesia, Dec 3 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the relocation of the national administration center from Jakarta should be considered.
Speaking to all governors from throughout the country at a gathering in Palangkaraya, Central Kalimantan, on Wednesday night, the president said Jakarta Metropolitan City is already too crowded to be the center of the national administration.
"Some 15 years ago there was a consideration that the national administration center be relocated to Jonggol in West Java," President Yudhoyono told the governors.
The president and his entourage arrived here on Wednesday afternoon for a two-day working visit to open the All Indonesia Provincial Governments Association (APPSI) national working conference on Thursday.
At the gathering with the governors on Wednesday night, the head of state said that when monetary crisis hit Indonesia some years ago, ideas on relocating the administration center from Jakarta at the time was no longer heard.
"Since the monetary crisis, ideas on relocating the administration center from Jakarta to Jonggol in West Java was no longer heard," the president said.
But the head of state added that the idea should be reconsidered because the Jakarta Metropolitan City has become too crowed.
However, he said the new center should not be very far away from Jakarta for easy access.
Commenting on the idea that the national administration center be relocated to Central Kalimantan city of Palangkaraya, the president said it would not be practical because the city is very far away from Jakarta.
But seeing the vast area of Palangkaraya city, President Yudhoyono said it was natural that its residents wanted to develop it into a better and bigger city.
The president said it made sense to develop Palangkaraya because unlike other areas in the country, Kalimatan island is relatively free of natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis.
