GOVT WILL ENSURE ONLY GENUINE STUDENTS ACCEPTED AT IPTS

KOTA BAHARU (Malaysia), Dec 3 (Bernama) -- The Higher Education Ministry
will work closely with agencies and private higher learning institutions (IPTS)
to ensure only genuine students from overseas are accepted at their
institutions.

Its minister Mohd Khaled Nordin said, the move was to make sure students do
not misuse their student visas to enter the country for other purposes,
resulting in social problems in the country.

The government does not want foreign students to use Malaysia as a base for
their immoral activities.

"We are working with the Immigration Department, police and IPTS to curb
such activities," he told reporters at the Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK)
Excellence Service Awards ceremony. The university is located in the east coast
state of Kelantan.

Mohamed Khaled said the government does not have any intention to stop
foreign students from entering the country (for studies) because they contribute
about RM2 to RM3 billion (US$591.78 million to US$887.8 million) a year in
revenue.
