PRESIDENT CALLS FOR PLANTING OF RAIN TREES TO ABSORB CO2

Palangkaraya, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, Dec. 3 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called on local authorities to plant millions of rain trees (Samanea saman) to help absorb carbon dioxide (CO2).

To address the impacts of the climate change, concrete actions such as tree planting on barren land were necessary, the head of state said here on Thursday.

In his opening remarks at the All-Indonesia Provincial Administrations Association (APPSI) meeting being attended by governors from the country's 33 provinces, President Yudhoyono explained about environmental damage in Indonesia.

"I will help governors to plant at least 100 million trees annually. Of the total number, 10 million should bee rain trees," he said.

He described rain trees as beautiful trees which could effectively absorb carbon dioxide (CO2).

A rain tree having a 30-m wide canopy could absorb 28 tons of CO2 annually, he said. Other advantages of the rain trees were they could live until hundreds of years and their roots were not destructive, he said.

The President said he would send at least 400,000 rain tree seedlings to each province.

"Every province should send officers to Cikeas (the president's residence) to join a brief course on plant nursery early January 2010," he said.

He also asked the governors to learn from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur about landscaping, in particular regreening.

Jakarta should have been greener than now, he said.

Rain tree (Samanea saman) is easily recognized by its
characteristic umbrella-shaped canopy. When grown in the
open, the tree usually reaches 15-25 m in height.

Last Tuesday (Dec. 2), First Lady Ani Bambang Yudhoyono planted a number of trees to mark the launching of a "Women's Tree Planting and Caring Movement 2009 for Water Conservation,"
Mrs. Ani Yudhoyono and members of some women's organizations planted 1,150 trees such a breadfruit and mango trees and sowed 30,000 fresh water milkfish fingerings at Cikaret.

In 2007, the Movement themed "Climate Change" managed to plant more than 15 million trees. In 2008, over 17 million trees such as breadfruit and coconut trees, were planted and some 42 million fresh water fingerlings were distributed throughout Indonesia. ***
