PRIME MINISTERS OF BALTIC REGION COUNTRIES MEET IN LATVIA
Riga, June 4 (Itar-Tass) - Reliability of energy resource supplies, production of renewable energy resources and nature conservation are the top issues on the agenda of the 7th Conference of Prime Ministers of the countries making up the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS).
The conference began Tuesday and its main session will be heldWednesday.
The Council unites Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Latvia,Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Iceland, Russia, and Germany.
All the countries except the last two are represented by Prime Ministers. Germany's Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel has delegated Foreign Minister Frank Walter Steinmeyer and Russian Prime MinisterVladimir Putin has sent his first deputy, Igor Shuvalov.
The meeting opened with a jazz concert in the Latvian National Opera House, and Latvian Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis greeted all the guests who came to Riga.
After the concert, heads of the delegations attended a dinner, in the course of which they had informal discussions.
European Commission President, Jose Manuel Barroso addressed theparticipants, mentioning in his speech the contribution that each Baltic region country having EU membership made to Europe's development and the achievements the countries scored in fulfilling the Lisbon strategy objectives.
European Commission Presidents are also CBSS members.
The CBSS was set up at a conference of foreign ministers in Copenhagen in 1992 on an initiative that came from Social Democratic parties in Denmark, Sweden and Germany.
The Netherlands, Britain, Italy, the U.S., France, Ukraine, and the Northwest Parliamentary Association have an observer status at the CBSS ministerial conferences.
