JAKARTA POLICE RAID FPI HQ, ARREST 58 MEMBERS
Jakarta, June 4 (ANTARA) - Jakarta police on Wednesday morning raided the Islam Defenders Front (FPI) headquarters on Jalan Petamburan III and arrested some 58 of the group's members over last Sunday's Monas Square violence.
The FPI chief, Habib Rizieq, was not among those arrested but he voluntarily accompanied them to the Jakarta Police headquarters. The FPI "commander" who had led the attack on a rally of Alliance for Freedom of Religion and Belief (AKBB) activists at the Monas Square, last Sunday, Munarman, however, was still at large.
In the raid, police also confiscated an assortment of objects as evidence, such as sharp weapons, sharpened bamboos, iron sticks, banners, and bags.
While the arrested FPI members were being intensively questioned, Habib Rizieq was kept in another room at the Jakarta Police Headquarters.
He said he had come to the Jakarta Police headquarters at his own will to make sure that the police would follow the proper procedures in treating the arrested FPI members.
Ahmad Mihdan, a member of the Islam Legal Defense Team who accompanied the FPI members in the questioning, said the team had prepared some 30 lawyers to assist them.
He said the case should be investigated thoroughly and, to this end police should not only question FPI members but also the other parties involved.
Meanwhile , police have put Munarman, also of the FPI who had led the Monas Square attack, in their list of wanted persons.
In the Monas Square incident, scores of people were injured with some of them having to undergo intensive treatment in hospital. - end.
