MALAYSIA, THAILAND ENJOY EXCELLENT RELATIONSHIP
BY D.ARUL RAJOO
BANGKOK, Dec 9 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and Thailand are enjoying excellent relationship at all levels and much progress have been made on many important initiatives, Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak said Tuesday night.
He said relations between the two neighbours had been friendly and
substantive, with significant economic cooperation that was on the upward trend.
"For instance, I am encouraged to note that there are more Proton cars on
the road in Bangkok today compared to a few years ago. The flow of people
between our two countries for tourism activities is impressive," he said in his
speech at the dinner hosted by his counterpart, Abhisit Vejjajiva at the
Government House.
Earlier, Najib led Malaysia's delegation at the Fourth Annual Consultation
and would later visit the restive southern province of Narathiwat with Abhisit.
"I look forward to the historic trip as I will have the opportunity to
witness first-hand the situation on the ground as well as efforts undertaken by
the Thai Government to bring peace and stability to the region," he said.
Najib said while the southern conflict which has claimed more than 3,500
lives was a domestic problem of Thailand, Malaysia would render whatever
assistance to help the Kingdom to resolve the problem.
In his speech, Abhisit said as fellow members of the Asean family and
especially as countries with shared border, the two countries' peace and
prosperity were interdependent.
"What happens on one side of the border will inevitably affect the other
side. It is for this reason that during the past years, Thailand and Malaysia
have focused cooperation on the situation in the Southern Border Provinces of
Thailand," he said.
According to him, since 2007, both had been collaborating closely under the
Confidence Building Measures through the 3 E's - education, employment and
entrepreneurship to address the south issue.
"The presence in person of Prime Minister Najib in Narathiwat is a testimony
of Malaysia's goodwill in working closely with Thailand in ensuring peace and
progress in our border areas," he said.
