M'SIA, INDONESIA SHOULD TAKE LEAF OUT OF GOOD US-UK RELATIONS
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 9 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and Indonesia should emulate the
long-standing good relations between the United States and United Kingdom, said
Information Communication and Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim.
He said this was because the US and UK never drifted apart and were always
in agreement on many issues for their mutual benefit, although both nations had
many dissimilarities.
"Why not Malaysia and Indonesia take a leaf out of good US-UK relations?"
said Rais after receiving a courtesy visit from the Indonesian ambassador here
Da'i Bachtiar and a group of senior editors from the republic Wednesday.
"If the UK and US which have many dissimilarities can cooperate, why not
Malaysia and Indonesia whose people are of the same stock?"
For that, Rais hoped the Ikatan Setiakawan Wartawan Malaysia-Indonesia
(Loyal Friendship Ties of Malaysia-Indonesia Journalists) would be the conduit
for strengthening relations between the two countries by taking into
consideration the views and aspirations of the local communities.
He also hoped that in future groups of eminent people from both countries
could play a role in resolving arising issues.
Rais also wants various regional programmes be encouraged to foster close
Malaysia-Indonesia relations as both shared the same culture and history.
He said culture and experience had taught both countries to exist in
harmony.
Asked whether any agreement was made at the meeting to avoid unfair or
speculative media reports on issues involving the two countries in future, Rais
said no such agreement was made.
He said both sides instead voiced opinions and agreed to find the best ways
to address any arising issue and to forward their ideas to the two countries'
top leaders for further action.
At the meeting, Rais also expressed the hope of making Malay Language and
Indonesian language, spoken by some 300 million people in the region, the
language of knowledge in order to build a strong civilisation, but without
denying the importance of the English language.
He said the national language institutions in both countries could play a
proactive role to achieve the goal.
