HYUNDAE BUILDING AUTOMOBILE PLANT IN ST.PETERSBURG
ST. PETERSBURG, June 5 (Itar-Tass) - The South Korean Hyundae Concern laid the cornerstone of its automobile plant here on Thursday.
St.Petersburg City Governor Valentina Matviyenko, who attended theceremony, described it as "a splendid prelude to the Twelfth International Economic Forum, which is to be held in the city". "It has become a good tradition for us to launch new high-tech enterprises here," Matviyenko added.
In her opinion, construction of a Hyundae plant in St.Petersburg will provide the city with 1,600 new highly-paid jobs". She recalled that the Japanese concern's leadership had promised her to design a new vehicle specially for Russian automobilists, a car that will meet all the ecology requirements".
"Russia has a very promising car market and Hyundae will never bedisappointed in its decision to build its plant here". Matviyenko promised that "the city will fulfil all its commitments to the South Korean company and will help build the plant at all the stages of its construction".
Matviyenko also recalled that there would be already fiveworld-renowned automobile companies doing business in St.Petersburg after the advent of the Hyundae concern. "There is no such combination in any other city of the world," she stated. "Moreover, our city industry has actively joined the work to locally produce automobile parts for those manufacturers and their range is steadily growing".
The South Korean company is planning to invest four hundred million U.S. dollars in the construction of its automobile plant, which will annually turn out 100,000 cars. All the construction jobs will be completed in September 2010 and the first automobile will come off the conveyer line at the end of 2010.
The Japanese company had declared during the signing of the memorandum with St.Petersburg that Hyundae would launch the construction of the plant' s second section right after the successful implementation of the first part of the project. It has already reserved a big plot of land for this purpose.
A whole cluster of automobile plants was built in St.Petersburg inrecent years. The Toyota Company had built its first automobile plant in Shushara, near St.Petersburg, at the end of 2007. A General Motors plant was opened in November 2007 and a Nissan plant is expected to launch the production of cars in the first quarter of 2009. Jobs to build a Suzuki plant are to be started shortly.
