13th Intl. Storytelling Festival kicks off in Tehran

TEHRAN, Dec. 12 (MNA) -- The 13th International Storytelling Festival will open here on Sunday at the Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults (IIDCYA).

Iranian storytellers will be competing with 15 of their counterparts from the eight countries of England, Sweden, Ireland, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Tajikistan and several more.

“Storytelling plays a major role in transferring our national and traditional culture to the younger generation but unfortunately, this venerable tradition is not practiced as much among families. The institute has plans to revive this old tradition once again by holding the festival,” said the executive manager Morteza Heidari.

“The institute’s teachers select the best stories narrated and performed over the past year and submit them to the secretariat of the festival,” he remarked.

“The three members of the selection board, Malakeh Chizari, Ali Khanjani and Narges Jafari, chose an assortment of 35 Iranian and 10 foreign works for the festival out of the 8000 submitted and the finalists will be judged by jury members Ozra Vakili, Gholamali Kiumarsi and Asadollah Shokraneh,” he explained.

“The participating foreign storytellers will be holding two workshops during the program for the teachers of IIDCYA and the Iranian storytellers. There will also be sessions in which Iranian and foreign storytellers will get an opportunity to meet and exchange views,” Heidari stated.

In addition, a tribute will be paid to the late Iranian children’s writer Mehdi Azar Yazdi on the side section of the festival, while a series of his works will be put on display. Azar Yazdi is best known for his serial book “Good Stories for Good Children,” which won a UNESCO prize in 1966 and was selected as Iran’s best book of the year in 1967.

The festival will run through December 16 at the institute located on Hejab St., off of Keshavarz Blvd.
