CHINA THANKS RUSSIA FOR HELP IN TIME OF NEED
BEIJING, June 6 (Itar-Tass) - The effort of Russian rescuers to overcome the consequences of the destructive Sichuan earthquake "was a demonstration of great humanism and heartfelt sentiments towards the people of China", PRC President Hu Jintao stated when, together withPresident Dmitry Medvedev, he received a group of envoys from the Russian Ministry for Emergency Situations, who had worked in Chendu, the administrative centre of Sichuan Province.
It can be said without exaggeration that this is an unprecedented case in the entire socio-political life of China, where strict ceremonial rules are usually observed without fail.
Although some Chinese leaders had met with foreign rescuers and medics in the course of the search-and-rescue operation, the Russians were the first foreigners to be invited to the Great Hall of the People, which stands on Tiananmen square in the centre of the Chinese capital.
President Hu Jintao stated during the official reception, arranged in honour of the Russian president: "Esteemed friends, I wish to express our huge gratitude to you". "Neglecting difficulties, you have rushed to counter this destructive earthquake," he stated.
"As far as I know, you have saved a man, who lay beneath the rubble for 127 hours running," the Chinese leader noted. "You have thereby demonstrated your great humanism and deep feelings for the Chinese people," he added.
"I sincerely thank you for all this on behalf of my people," he said.
For his part, Medvedev invited a group of Chinese schoolchildren from the quaked area to come to Russia to restore their health. He also noted that Moscow was always ready to come to China's assistance. "Russia has urgently reacted to the earthquake in China and has rushed humanitarian aid, rescuers and medics to the disaster spot," he noted. "We are determined to continue our aid, if need be, and this is how it should be among friends, who are always side by side, and whose relations should always be like that," the Russian president stated.
A statement, released by the Xinhua News Agency, stresses that the Russian President's visit took place at the time "when the Chinese government and people are exerting all their efforts to cope with theconsequences of the earthquake".
"He was the first Head of State to come to China after this destructive natural calamity and this was a demonstration of the Russian leader's priceless support to the Chinese people". The article recalls that, according to Medvedev's instruction,Russian humanitarian aid was sent, is being sent, and will be sent to the calamity area. The Xinhua Agency also notes that "the Russian President's aid to all the Chinese, hit by the calamity, was patent proof of the traditional friendship between the two nations and also of the Sino-Russian relations of strategic interaction and cooperation".
The Chinese Defence Ministry also published a letter of gratitude to the Russian side for its decision to provide aircraft and helicopters to deliver humanitarian aid and to help the population of the quaked area.
"Russian military transport planes were the first to render aid toSichuan. Russia had sent to Sichuan seven Il-76 planes during the first few days of the earthquake, which had delivered there 150 tons of tents, blankets, and other humanitarian aid," the message notes.
Moreover, the Far East Airbase of the Russian Ministry for Emergency Situations had dispatched to Sichuan a unique Mi-26 cargo helicopter, designed to evacuate disaster victims, to lift humanitarian aid and machinery, and to extinguish forest fires. China has no such aircraft.
The plane was used to lift heavy externally-mounted machinery to forbidding areas. Several crews had worked by shifts and in the most difficult conditions from dawn to sunset without any breaks.
Not only high-ranking statesmen, but also rank-and-file citizens, have addressed gratitude to the Russian side.
The Itar-Tass office in Beijing received a letter from twelve-year-old Chinese boy Zhao Yunching, expressing gratitude to the Russian medics who had worked in the quaked area.
"In spite of the huge distance, separating us, and in spite of all the difficulties, you come in time to the calamity-hit districts of China and worked, together with those who had suffered from the earth tremors, thereby saving many human lives," the letter says.
"The Chinese people will never forget your aid and your contribution to the rescue operation," Zhao Yunching wrote. The kid is a six grader of a school in Pengchou, where the Russian aeromobile hospital was pitched.
The 65-man group of medics, who had worked in that town from May 20 to June 4, provided medical aid to more than 1,500 patients and carried out hundreds of difficult surgical operations. The special medical equipment and medicines, which were brought to Sichuan together with the aeromobile hospital, were turned over to the Chinese side free of charge.
According to eyewitness accounts, many people of Pengchou had tears in their eyes during the parting with Russian doctors. Eleven-year-old He Weihua, whose left leg and head were gravely injured during the quake, was brought on an invalid carriage to see off the Russian doctors and nurses.
The boy told them with tears in his eyes: "You have saved me. I would never be able to walk again without your aid. Thank you so much. I promise to be a diligent school child".
The Russian medics had performed a difficult surgicaloperation on the boy. "My heart is throbbing with emotion. I thank you for your successful effort to put me on my feet again," 10-year Dung Yao sang.
She wrote the song herself praising the Russian physicians.
"If a Giant Panda could speak, it would tell everybody about the deep friendship that exists between the Chinese and Russian peoples," Assistant Secretary of the Pengchou Communist Party Committee Sue Min stated during the farewell ceremony.
She presented Panda dolls to each member of the Russian mobile hospital and a Banner of Honour to the entire team, inscribed in Chinese and Russian: "The Saved Lives and Restored Health are Convincing Proof of our Profound Friendship".
