Only regional states can guarantee security of Caspian Sea

TEHRAN, Dec. 14 (MNA) -- Iranian Supreme National Security Council Secretary Saeed Jalili has said that only regional states can guarantee the security of the Caspian Sea.

“The security of the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus region should be maintained by the countries of the region,” he said in a meeting with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov here on Monday.

Jalili added that Tehran and Baku enjoy unique, friendly, and historical ties and the two countries should make efforts to enhance their relations and make them strategic ties.

Mammadyarov expressed satisfaction over the current level of bilateral ties, adding, “Baku is examining ways to expand its cooperation with Tehran.”

The Azerbaijani foreign minister stated that the interference of foreign forces can never guarantee the security of the region.

He also said that Iran plays an important role in the security of the region and asked Iran to help resolve the situation in the Caucasus.
