Leaders hail Turkmenistan-China gas pipeline project.
ASHGABAT, December 14 (Itar-Tass) - The Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan-Kazakhstan-China gas pipeline is a major project, which reflects a boost in energy cooperation, Chinese President Hu Jintao said at a ceremony to unveil the trans-Asian gas pipeline at the gas processing plant Samantepe, 80 kilometres away from the city of Turkmenabat.
"We shall make every effort so that energy cooperation between our
countries develops comprehensively, the energy industry achieves a stable
development and long-term, stable and safe relations are built," Hu Jintao
emphasized.
Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev called the construction of the
gas pipeline "a bright example of mutually advantageous cooperation and
partnership of our countries". He particularly emphasized that with the
commissioning of the gas pipeline "positions of the whole Central Asian
region and the world energy system will strengthen noticeably".
According to Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov, the gas
pipeline is "one of the most large-scale energy projects of the present
day, which will have a major positive influence on the situation in the
region and outside it, and will become a factor of security in Asia".
"This construction will go down in the history of the 21st century, as
it demonstrates to the whole world an example of what can be achieved for
the sake of common goals," Uzbek President Islam Karimov said. He pledged
that his country would ensure "reliable and safe transit of Turkmen gas to
the territory of Kazakhstan and further to China".
Turkmenistan will deliver gas to China during the coming 30 years. Gas
deliveries will amount to 150 million cubic meters before the end of 2009.
The figure for 2010 will be six billion cubic meters. Ashgabat plans to
reach design capacity - 40 billion cubic meters - by 2015. The transit
countries, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, intend to export to China ten
billion cubic meters of gas each.
A ceremony of the opening of the new gas pipeline took place in the
eastern part of Turkmenistan, close to the Turkmen-Uzbek border, on the
right bank of the Amu Darya River. The Samantepe gas field is situated
there. It is part of the contract territory of Bagty-yarlyk (the Turkmen
for "bringing happiness") of the Chinese National Petroleum Corporation.
Its gas reserves amount to 1.3 trillion cubic meters. The Corporation got
a license for the prospecting and extraction of gas in 2007. It continues
to be the only foreign company working at Turkmen ground gas fields.
