100 MIGRANT WORKERS RECEIVE EDUCATION GRANTS WORTH NEARLY US$30,000
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 13 (Bernama) -- Western Union Company, a global payment service provider, today awarded education grants worth a total of RM100,000 (some US$29,351) to 100 migrant workers in Malaysia.
The recipients of the Western Union Educational Grant Programme are from
Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Nepal, the Philippines and Vietnam.
Western Union said in a statement Sunday the programme, now in its second
year, aimed to avail funds which will help aspiring individuals and their
families tide over obstacles and lead a better life through higher education.
"Each grant of RM1,000 covers as much as a year's tuition fees and other
necessities like books and uniforms in countries such as India and the
Philippines," it said.
Ratheesh Kumar, Western Union's Regional Vice President in South Asia and
South East Asia, said Western Union had continued with the education grant
programme to help extend a helping hand to migrant workers in Malaysia.
"The education grants allow individuals to realise their tremendous
potential with scholarships supporting literacy.
"In the past year, the recession has made itself keenly felt in countries
around Malaysia, that created an influx of migrant workers from Indonesia, the
Philippines, India, Myanmar and Thailand seeking additional work support in
Malaysia," he said in the statement.
For its second year, the Western Union Education Grant Programme has
experienced unprecedented need, as evidenced from the estimated 19,000
applications received, he said.
Meanwhile, Country Director of HOPE Worldwide Malaysia, Darick Wong, said
Western Union's education grants offered hope and peace of mind to the migrants
in terms of their ability in providing continuous education for their children
and also enabling their children to stay in school longer.
"The education grants will also ease the burden of migrants of having to
make a lump sum payment when their children begin their school year and it is
also a good support for them in providing financial assistance during this
challenging economic times," he said.
