BEIRUT, December 16 (Itar-Tass) - A Center of Russian Science and
Culture is due to open in Jordan's capital Amman Wednesday, Alexander
Dorofeyev, the cultural secretary of the Russian embassy in Jordan told
Itar-Tass.
The center is located on Zahran Street in the building that formerly
housed the Russian Trade Mission to Jordan.
The gala opening ceremony will bring together Jordanian government
officials, businessmen, cultural personalities, and Russian diplomats led
by Ambassador Alexander Kalugin.
The commissioning of the center is destined to become one of the most
significant events of the outgoing year in terms of bilateral relations
with Jordan . Officials on both sides hope it will help the strengthening
of relations between Russia and Jordan, as well as between Russia and
countries of the Middle East in general.
To date, the Russian Federal Agency for CIS Affairs, Cooperation with
Fellow-Countrymen Abroad and International Humanitarian Cooperation
/Rossotrudnichestvo/ has had six centers of science and culture in Arab
countries - Egypt /Cairo and Alexandria/, Morocco, Tunisia, Lebanon, and
Syria.
Timed for the gala opening of the center in Amman is an exhibition of
Russian painters, a book display, and a concert of Russian performer
Vladimir Malchenko, Dorofeyev said.
He indicated that the center plans maintaining the closest possible
relations with the graduates of Russian universities and colleges living
in Jordan, as well as with local ethnic associations of Caucasians peoples
who reside in the Middle East, and the local communities of Orthodox
Christians.
Centers of Science and Culture in foreign countries provide Russia
with a network of cultural projects and theme programs dedicated to its
memorable dates and state holidays.
They also help in promoting contacts between various regions of Russia
and partners abroad.
The centers organize and host concerts, individual and group
exhibitions of professional artists and folk craftsmen, film festivals,
museum projects, and presentations of Russian publishing houses and mass
media.
