'ٍEfforts for principlist-reformist unity underway' in Iran

TEHRAN, Dec. 18 (MNA) – A senior lawmaker announced on Monday that two groups -- a six-person group from the Expediency Council and an eight-member group from another unnamed source -- have started efforts to broker unity among principlists and reformists.
MP Mohammad Reza Bahonar also blasted harsh criticism against Expediency Council Chairman Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.
Some religious and political figures have warned against divisions in the society and asked officials and opposition leaders to avoid divisive language, the influential legislator told a press conference.
Bahonar, who is also the secretary general of the Islamic Association of Engineers, praised Rafsanjani’s efforts for national unity.
Advising the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) to air Hashemi’s views, he said, “There are many positive points in Hashemi’s speeches, so the IRIB should try to cover those positive views in the national media (state TV).”
On the slandering of recognized political figures by some MPs in the Majlis, Bahonar said “We urge our colleagues not to turn the Majlis podium into a political battlefield and we seriously expect the MPs to follow this policy.”
He stated that unfortunately all politicians chant the slogan of unity, but their behaviors are in practice against the unity.
“The major part of our media space is under control of extremists who are seeking to find new enemies against the establishment,” he said.
The political movements should try to regain the control of the media, he asserted.
Referring to the great insult to late Imam Khomeini, the senior lawmaker said analysts are at odds over the IRIB performance in showing the image in which a poster depicting Imam was torn down.
“Some held that because the incident took place among a limited number of people, the image should have not been shown in a public space (in the TV),” he said.
However, some believe if a firm action is not taken against such outrageous desecrations, it is possible that others dare to repeat such acts, he added.
Bahonar also implicitly ruled out the possibility that the desecration has been carried out by former presidential candidate Mir Hussain Mousavi’s supporters.
However, reformists should disown their connection with those who have invented anti-revolutionary and deviated slogans, he noted.
He urged the senior reformists to embrace the establishments’ principles once again, and then their rightful views can be heard, he said.
Bahonar also said opposition groups in the country must have media to express their views.
“Opponents within the system must have media.”
He went on to say that hardliners’ call for arresting senior reformists is an extremist stance.
The establishment will deal with them when it is expedient in order to maintain national security and unity.
