Iranian, Indonesian flicks share Kerala festival grand prize

TEHRAN, Dec. 20 (MNA) -- Iran’s international award-winning “About Elly” shared the grand prize with “Fishing Platform” by Ravi Bharwani from Indonesia at India’s International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK).


The movie, directed by Asghar Farhadi, shared the festival’s Suvarna Chakoram with Indonesia’s for “Fishing Platform” as best feature films of the event.


Suvarna Chakoram, the Golden Crow Pheasant Award and a cash prize of Rs. 1,000,000 (about $20,000), is awarded to the best feature film and shared equally by the director and the producer.


“About Elly” won a Silver Bear for best director at the Berlinale 2009. It is also representing Iranian cinema in the category of Best Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards in 2010 and represented Iranian cinema at the Golden Globe Awards 2009.


Starring Shahab Hosseini, Golshifteh Farahani, Mani Haqiqi, Saber Abar and Merila Zarei, “About Elly” tells the story of middle class Iranians whose trip to the Caspian Sea turns into a disaster as they try to maintain their social customs.


The 14th IFFK was held from December 11 to 18 in the city of Kerala in southern India.
