INDIAN OFFICE WORKERS WASTE AN HOUR SURFING THE NET DAILY

NEW DELHI, Dec 21 (Bernama) -- At least one working hour a day is wasted at
Indian corporate offices due to surfing social networking sites, according to an
industry report.

The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Assocham) Social
Development Foundation (ASDF) survey revealed that on average an employee spends
about 60 minutes checking social websites for personal reasons during working
hours.

"Almost each day, an average corporate employee spends an hour, glued to
various social networking sites such as Orkut, Facebook, Myspace, Linkdein, for
romancing or otherwise derive some satisfaction out of it," says the report.

With this average, a corporate employee's working day is reduced by an hour
from eight hours to seven hours, it adds.

The survey was conducted among nearly 4,000 corporate employees in age
groups ranging from 21 to 30, 31-45 and 46-60 from September to November.

The interviews were done across major metros and towns such as Ahmedabad,
Bangalore, Chennai, Cochin, Delhi, Indore and Mumbai.

Assocham secretary-general D. S Rawat said the majority of the companies
effectively lost close to 12.5 per cent of total productivity each day since
their employee keep accessing these social sites.

He said the growing use of browsing sites could be dangerous for overall
productivity and IT companies had already installed software to restrict its
use.
