Russia FM, Egypt pres, LAS head discuss Palestine-Israel situation.
CAIRO, December 21 (Itar-Tass) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei
Lavrov meets on Monday with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Secretary
General of the League of Arab States (LAS) Amr Moussa to discuss prospects
to improve the Palestinian-Israeli situation and unblock the peace process
on the whole.
"The talks will focus on Middle East problems, the Arab-Israeli
settlement in the first place," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei
Nesterenko said.
"The dynamics of events and the high activity of Russia and Egypt in
this direction make it imperative to constantly coordinate efforts aimed
at correcting the Palestinian-Israeli situation and unblocking the entire
peace process," he emphasized.
"Moscow highly appreciates the efforts of the Egyptian leadership to
liquidate a split in the Palestinian ranks," the Russian diplomat went on
to say.
"Great attention will be paid to promising projects of bilateral
cooperation in various spheres," Nesterenko said.
"Despite the world financial crisis the positive dynamics of the
Russian-Egyptian cooperation in the trade and economic sphere has been
preserved," he emphasized.
"Trade between our two countries stood at 2.06 billion dollars in 2008
and a slight growth is expected in 2009," Nesterenko emphasized.
He noted that cooperation in tourism kept growing. A total of 1.8
million Russians visited Egypt in 2008, and their number may reach 2
million in 2009.
Sergei Lavrov will visit the headquarters of the League of Arab States
where he will meet the LAS its Secretary-General Amr Moussa. They will
sign a memorandum on the establishment of the Russian-Arab cooperation
forum.
Sergei Lavrov will award the Order of Friendship to the LAS
secretary-general and Speaker of the Egyptian People's Assembly Ahmed
Fathi Sorour, who is also chairman of the Egypt-Russia association. All
of them have been awarded by decree of the Russian president for great
contribution to developing cooperation between the two countries.
.About 50 scientific experiments to be made by ISS crew.
BAIKONUR SPACEPORT (Kazakhstan), December 21 (Itar-Tass) - The Soyuz
TMA-17 spacecraft successfully blasted off from Baikonur at 00:52 a.m. on
Monday. Forty-eight scientific experiments will be made during the 161-day
mission to the ISS by the crew of three astronauts.
Soyuz will bring to the ISS Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kotov, NASA
astronaut Timothy Creamer and astronaut of the Japanese Space Agency JAXA
Soichi Noguchi.
The docking with the ISS is scheduled for December 23, at 01:54 Moscow
time, Roskosmos sources said.
That was the first launch of a Soyuz spaceship done on a winter night.
"As a rule, Soyuz launches have taken place in spring, summer or fall and
in broad daylight," a representative of the Energia Aerospace Corporation
told the media.
Federal Space Agency head Anatoly Perminov explained the unusual time
and season with the doubled number of launches of Russian spaceships. He
also said that nighttime gave ballistic and energy saving advantages.
Forty-eight scientific experiments will be made, "one of them will
prepare for long-distance space missions. It aims to study the possibility
of preservation of astronauts' bone mass with a special diet," Perminov
said.
"The Japanese astronaut will upgrade the national module Kibo," and
the Russian and American astronauts will also work on their segments of
the ISS, Energia Aerospace Corporation President Vitaly Lopota said.
JAXA is the state-run agency in charge of the Japanese aerospace
program. It launches satellites and automatic interplanetary stations,
takes part in the ISS program and plans to create national manned
spaceships and to study the Moon.
Kibo is the largest module of the ISS. Its first component reached the
station on March 14, 2008.
As of now, the ISS has four segments - Russian, American, European and
Japanese. The fully complete American segment is made up of four modules,
named Destiny, Unity, Quest and Harmony. The European module Columbus was
added to the station last year, alongside two of three sections of the
Japanese Kibo module.
The Russian segment of the ISS will be enlarged with three modules
before 2012. The existent Zvezda, Zarya and Pirs will be supplemented
with three research modules - MIM2, MIM1 and MLM (multifunctional
laboratory module).
The heavy multifunctional laboratory module MLM will be brought to
orbit in 2011 and enlarge the program of Russian experiments inside and
outside the ISS. MLM will also make the ISS more comfortable.
NEM-1 and NEM-2 modules will add to the Russian segment in 2014 and
2015. The modules will enlarge the energy capacity of the Russian segment
and make the research program more extensive.
The research modules will increase the capacity of the ISS Russian
segment for scientific work, because each module has two workplaces. There
will be additional docking units, too.
