Improved banking will increase Iran-Pakistan trade: envoy
KERMANSHAH, Dec. 22 (MNA) – By alleviating banking problems between Iran and Pakistan trade will reach $3 billion in the next 2 to 3 years, Iranian commercial envoy to Pakistan said.
Ahmad Fasihi said that we are pursuing permission from the Pakistani Central Bank to allow an Iranian bank to become a trade center in Karachi, and a Pakistani bank open a branch in Tehran.
By doing this, the problem of opening letters of credit (LCs) will be essentially resolved for merchants and trade between the two countries will exceed $3 billion, he stated. The bilateral trade in 2008 trade between the two countries stood at $500 million.
Fasihi added that due to our common borderline with Pakistan transportation fees are low and this is a factor we should take advantage of.
He said that Iran could transit Pakistani products to Europe, adding that Tehran could also export technical and engineering services to that country.
