SHIRAZ, Dec. 23 (MNA) -- There has been a 100 percent increase in number of inter-city busses across the country over the past four years, Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najar said here on Tuesday.

The number has reached 24 thousands in 2009 from 12 thousands in 2005, Najjar said, putting stress on the ministry’s efforts to improve the country’s public transportation fleet over the past years.
Public transportation users also doubled in number between 2005 and 2009, he said, adding that public transportation currently accounts for 64 percent of all modes of transportation in the Islamic Republic.
He also spoke of a fourfold increase in fund allocation to inter-city trains over the past years.
Highlighting the impact of expanding public transportation system on the reduction of the country’s gasoline consumption, he said in light of the ministries’ policies to conserve, gasoline consumption has decreased to 20 million liters per day.
