Iran ready to host meeting of Iraqi neighbors

TEHRAN, Dec. 23 (MNA) – Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast announced Tehran’s readiness to host a meeting of Iraq’s neighbors while ruling out the possibility of U.S. participation in the summit.
The Iraqi neighbors plan to hold a summit, the fourth of its kind since the 2003 invasion of the country, to study approaches to help stabilize Iraq.
Misunderstanding
On the recent border dispute between Iran and Iraq in the Fakkeh border region, the spokesman said Iran has proposed reviewing a demarcation of Iran-Iraq borderline in order to prevent probable future misunderstandings.
Media outlets announced on Sunday that Iran and Iraq plan to set up an arbitration committee to clear up the confusion over the oil field in the borderline.
"We believe this is a technical issue and experts should review it to prevent such misunderstandings," Mehmanparast told a regular press conference.
"The best solution is to form the committee as soon as possible," he added.
In a telephone conversation on Saturday Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and his Iraqi counterpart Hoshyar Zebari agreed on a view that setting up a committee would be the best option to resolve the dispute.
Iranian officials’ foreign trips
On the objective of trips by Iranian officials to Lebanon, Japan and Egypt, Mehmanparast said the trips are in line with the policy to boost ties between Iran and other countries.
Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki had traveled to Beirut, Supreme National Security Council secretary Saeed Jalili to Tokyo, and Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani to Cairo to take part in a committee meeting of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC).
Mehmanparast said Mottaki traveled to Beirut to express Iran’s gladness over political stability in Lebanon.
London conference
About the invitation sent for Iran to attend the London conference on Afghanistan which will be held on January 28 next year, he said Iran has not decided yet to attend the conference.
“Iran is considering participation in the conference,” he said.
No letter to Egyptian president
The spokesman also dismissed the claim that the Iranian president has sent a letter to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
Arabic daily, Al Bayan, had claimed that the Iranian parliament speaker carried a letter for the Egyptian president.
Reparation
On a call by the Iranian president who has demanded a compensation for the damages inflicted on Iran during the Iraqi imposed war on Iran in the 1980s and also the sufferings of Iranians during the World War II, he said the Iranian Foreign Ministry is determined to pursue the issues.
“This issue will not be forgotten with the passage of time,” he stated.
Asked on a possibility that Japan would replace Russia in providing nuclear fuel to the Tehran nuclear reactor in the light of Jalili’s visits to Japan’s nuclear facilities, the spokesman said, “Iran is ready to cooperate with all countries including Japan concerning Iran’s nuclear program.”
Pointing to the remarks made by the U.S. defense secretary on the possibility of military action against Iran, he said the Zionist lobby attempts to revive the policies defended by neo-conservatives but “we consider such acts as propaganda and psychological warfare.”
Elsewhere in his remarks, Mehmanparast condemned the fratricide in Yemen once again.
The spokesman also announced that the Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri has accepted Iran’s invitation to Tehran, but the time for the trip is not set yet.
