Iran seeking to strengthen ties between Islamic nations

TEHRAN, Dec. 23 (MNA) -- Iranian Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani said Iran is attempting to strengthen ties between Islamic countries, in line with its foreign policy.

“In the current world situation, Islamic countries should have closer relations, although they may disagree on some issues,” Larijani told reporters at a press conference in Cairo on Monday.

Asked about the hurdles in the way of efforts to expand Tehran-Cairo relations, Larijani said Iran and Egypt are influential and important countries in the region and it would be wise for them to forge closer relations.

Undoubtedly, Israel is opposed to any breakthrough in Iran-Egypt relations, but the two countries are determined to pave the way for the expansion of their relations through negotiation and exchanges of official visits, he stated.

He described his meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak as positive, saying the two nations are keen to expand bilateral cooperation.

Emphasizing that Iran is capable of repelling any possible military action by the Zionist regime, Larijani said it is unlikely that Israel would embark on such an insane move.

“We don’t care about Israel’s (threatening) screams made due to fear.”

Elsewhere in his remarks, Larijani called the sanctions imposed by the Western powers futile, saying that Iran has made notable technological achievements, especially in the field of nuclear energy, despite the previous sanctions.

On the allegations that Iran is intervening in Yemen, he said Iran has extremely amicable relations with Yemen and has never meddled in Yemen’s internal affairs.

Commenting on the hostile stance toward Iran’s nuclear rights adopted by certain officials of the International Atomic Energy Agency, he stated that this will put the final nails in the coffin of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

According to the NPT, the IAEA is required to pursue the goal of total nuclear disarmament and to lay the groundwork for countries to gain access to nuclear energy meant for peaceful purposes, but the agency has failed to fulfill its obligations, he added.

Larijani travelled to Egypt on Sunday to attend a meeting of the Parliamentary Union of Organization of Islamic Conference member states (PUOICM).
