SENIOR CITIZENS AMONG 27 BIRD LOVERS FINED FOR CRUELTY TO ANIMALS

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 28 (Bernama) -- Two senior citizens were among 27 bird
lovers fined for cruelty to animals in separate magistrate's courts here Monday.

In the first case, Magistrate Abdullah Siddiq Mohd Nasir ordered Khoo Khang
Huat, 70, and 13 other men, aged between 27 and 70, to be fined RM130 each or
three months jail in default after finding them guilty of participating in a
magpie fighting competition at a recreation club for bird lovers in Jinjang here
at 9.30am on Dec 13.

The accused, made up of retirees and unemployed, were represented by counsel
Ahmad Ridza Mohd Noh.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Norhanum Hassan prosecuted.

In another court, Chen Long, 72, together with 12 others were fined the same
amount by Magistrate Aina Azahra Ariffin after they pleaded guilty to the same
charge.


Aged between 27 and 72 years, they were also retirees and jobless men and
were represented by counsel Khairul Amir Abdullah.

DPP Aidatul Azura Zainal Abidin appeared for the prosecution.

All the accused were charged under Section 44(1)(g) of the Animals Ordinance
1953.
