Tehran, Minsk to expand agro co-op
TEHRAN, Dec. 28 (MNA) — Iranian agricultural minister stated that agricultural cooperation between Iran and Belarus will expand.
The Minister of Agricultural Jihad in a meeting with Belarusian Ambassador to Iran Victor Reebok said that the two countries have a good potential in the field of agriculture for trading purposes.
Sadeq Khalilian added that in the agricultural field the emphasis should be placed on the private sectors of the two countries and the government’s role in this regard is facilitating their activities.
The minister stated that Iran is taking measures such as creating specialized committees and fixing tariffs to enhance trade between the two countries.
Reebok said that agricultural activities make up the major portion of Belarus’ economy, adding that in the 10-month period of the current year $7.2 million products were exported to Belarus from Iran of which one-third were agricultural products.
He said the products sent to Belarus consisted of raisins, canned food, fruits, dates, figs and nuts.
The Belarusian diplomat offered that his country is prepared to export red meat, powder milk and butter to Iran.
Belarus and Iran have been pursuing closer economic ties in recent years; according to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, “The two countries enjoy close cooperation in various areas of transportation, energy, industry, economy and trade."
In May 2007, the two agreed to work towards deeper bilateral trade and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko referred to his country’s relationship with the Islamic Republic as a “strategic partnership.”
