Widespread condemnation of Tehran's Ashura protests

TEHRAN, Dec. 28 (MNA) – The desecration of Ashura rituals on Sunday has given rise to widespread condemnations and judicial bodies have been urged to seriously deal with the culprits.

On the tenth day of Muharram, known as Ashura, which is a mourning day to mark the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), some protesters staged riots in Tehran.

The protesters chanted anti-government slogans and set fires down the streets.

Police clashed with protesters and managed to quell the situation by using batons, tear gas and warning shots.

Earlier on Sunday, the deputy national police chief, Ahmadreza Radan, said four protesters were killed in Tehran.

One person was shot dead mysteriously, two were killed in a car accident, and one fell off a bridge, he explained.

The Intelligence Ministry has released a statement announcing that a number of Mojahedin Khalq Organization (MKO) members were arrested on Sunday.

Hossein Sobhaninia of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee has said that the committee will review the issue in the near future.

The incidents of the Ashura showed that these rioters have no respect for the nation’s sanctities, he told the Mehr News Agency on Monday.

Sohaninia added that this will not be the last time that the rioters breach the law and insult the nation’s religious beliefs because the Judiciary has not seriously dealt with them.

Rioters are connected to foreigners

MP Esmaeil Kosari stated that radical protestors are connected to foreign elements.

“We have repeatedly emphasized that these rioters will continue their efforts as far as the Judiciary is lenient with them and does not deal with them effectively,” he told the MNA on Monday.

People to give crushing response to rioters

Releasing a statement on Monday, the Islamic Coalition Party condemned the incidents on Ashura ceremonies, emphasizing that the people will give a crushing response to those who show no respect to religious sanctities.

The statement added that the real face of the rioters has been disclosed and it is clear that they are connected to foreign elements.

Riots not related to presidential election

The Secretary General of Zeinab Society, Maryam Behrouzi, has stated that the desecration of rituals has no relation to the election protests.

“The desecrations on the day of Ashura should not be linked to the tenth presidential election,” she told the MNA on Monday.

Behrouzi added that those who resorted to insults on the Ashura day are not Muslim or Shia because they would respect Ashura rituals even if they had objections.

She also revealed that the central council of the Zeinab Society will review these incidents next Saturday.

GC condemns desecrations

The Guardian Council has released a statement, condemning the incidents on Ashura in Tehran.

The incidents showed that the rioters are against the religious beliefs of the nation, part of the statement said.

The GC also asked related officials to identify and punish the culprits.
