Nationwide march injected new blood into veins of revolution: Iran's Ayatollah

QOM, Iran, Jan. 2 (MNA) — Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi has said nationwide rallies on Wednesday injected a “fresh blood into the veins of the revolution”.

Iranians staged marches throughout the country on Wednesday to protest against the anti-government riots in Tehran on the Ashura day, December 27.

Ashura is the tenth day of the lunar month of Muharram and the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) and his 72 companions.

In a meeting with a group of Islamic Coalition Party members on Thursday, the ayatollah praised peoples’ participation in the rallies in defending Islamic values and the leadership.

He went on to say the post-election events should not be considered as part of electoral issues because they have gone far beyond mere electoral disputes.

The grand ayatollah urged political parties not to accuse their rivals of sacrilegious acts on the Ashura day.

What is seen today is a fight waged by the enemies against Islamic values intended to negate the Islamic form of governance, he noted.

The Wednesday march in Tehran was unprecedented in 30 years after the revolution and was a reminder of the early days of the Islamic revolution (in 1979) when people marched in streets to topple the monarchic regime, Makarem Shirazi commented.
