Cyclone interrupting Sakhalin-mainland ferry service for fifth day
.
3/1 Tass 23
KHABAROVSK, January 3 (Itar-Tass) - The Vanino-Kholmsk ferry service,
connecting the island and the mainland, has not been working for the fifth
day over a cyclone.
The Sakhalin-7 and the Sakhalin-10 ferries are in the Vanino port
(mainland). "However, the vessels will sail out for the Kholmsk port only
on Monday morning, since weather conditions will not permit them shuttling
between the mainland and the island earlier," Itar-Tass learnt on Sunday
at the forwarding service of the Vanino-Kholmsk ferry service.
According to a source, the cyclone stopped the service operation on
December 30. Heavy snowstorms swooped down on eastern areas of the
Khabarovsk Territory. Blizzards battered the Vanino, Sovetskaya-Gavan,
Nikolayevsky and Ulchsky districts. Over a month norm of precipitations
fell on some towns and villages during two days.
There were disruptions in the operation of motor traffic over
snowdrifts on highways. On Saturday, passengers could not go from
Khabarovsk to Komsomolsk-on-Amur and other cities. All trips on this
highway were cancelled. Traffic of long-distance buses resumed only on
Sunday. Over 140 units of special machinery were dispatched to clear roads.
The territorial branch of the Ministry for Emergencies warned citizens
in good time of the looming cyclone. According to information from the
local branch for emergencies, all vital facilities in the territory as
well as housing and communal services are operating normally.
