WCRP to deal with global info space development
Moscow, June 11 (Itar-Tass) - Delegates to the 10th jubilee World
Congress of the Russian Press, opening here on Wednesday, are to discuss the problems of development of the global Russian-language information space and protection of the Russian language.
About 1,000 participants in the congress and guests from 65 countries, as well as more than 200 accredited Russian and foreign journalists gather at the World Trade Center, an official in the Executive Committee of the organiser of the forum -- the World Association of Russian Press (WARP) -- has told Itar-Tass.
The forum will deal with the present-day state of the Russian-language press abroad and the role of the Russian language in the development of the world civilisation.
The role and place of the WARP in the life of the Russian-speaking
diasporas in the light of globalisation will be another key subject of
discussion.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin are to meet with participants in the forum. A speech of greetings at the opening ceremony is to be made by Koichiro Matsuura, Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, who arrived in Moscow at the invitation of Itar-Tass.
Vitaly Ignatenko, WARP President and Itar-Tass General Director,
points out, "We can now say with confidence that the Association and its forum have stood the test of time, developing into a powerful factor of the world information space."
Ignatenko stressed, "The Russian language press abroad is not the
bearer of Russia's political influence". "Moreover, there is at times a sharp criticism addressed to Moscow in its pages and foreign colleagues have full right to that. The main thing is in another aspect, namely, common care for the maintenance and furtherance of the cultural tradition, the preservation of the cultural wealth which has been amassed by generations of compatriots and which unites us,> he said.
