FOREIGN MINISTRY TAKES OVER MALAYSIAN TECHNICAL COOPERATION PROGRAMME

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 4 (Bernama) -- The Foreign Ministry said today it had
taken over the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) and other
South-South cooperation programmes like the Third Country Training Programme
from the Economic Planning Unit of the Prime Minister's Department from Friday
(Jan 1).

According to a ministry statement here, MTCP had proven to be a successful
programme in keeping with Malaysia's commitment towards South-South cooperation.

Through MTCP, Malaysia had managed to promote technical cooperation amongst
developing countries, strengthen regional and sub-regional cooperation and
nurture collective self-reliance among developing countries, it said, adding
that since its inception in 1980, over 20,000 participants from 140 countries
had benefited from the various courses offered under the MTCP.

MTCP emphasises on the development of human resources through the provision
of training in various areas which are essential for a country's development
such as public administration, good governance, health service, education,
sustainable development, agriculture, poverty alleviation, investment promotion,
ICT and banking.

Annually, more than 100-short term specialised courses are offered to
participants from developing countries by more than 50 MTCP training
institutions nationwide.
