Four Russian servicemen on missing list after Georgia-SOssetia war.
MOSCOW, January 5 (Itar-Tass) -- Four Russian servicemen are still on the missing list after the Georgian-South Ossetian war in August 2008, the Russian Defence Ministry reported on Monday.
"The Russian interdepartmental committee for prisoners of war,
interned and missing in action servicemen is continuing to take the range
of measures to clarify the fate of four Russian servicemen," the chief of
the Defence Ministry department for the perpetuation of the servicemen
killed for the protection of the Fatherland, Alexander Kirilin said. The
foresaid committee "is working jointly with the federal executive
authorities, the regional delegation of the Red Cross International
Committee in the Russian Federation and the U.S. side of the Russian-U.S.
Commission on Prisoners of War/Missing in Action Affairs."
Kirilin recalled that the Red Cross International Committee assisted
Russia to receive the results of the identification genetic tests on the
remains of the Russian servicemen, who were killed in the Georgian-South
Ossetian war.
According to the Russian Prosecutor General's Office Investigation
Committee (SKP), 48 Russian servicemen, including nine peacekeepers, were
killed during Georgia's invasion in South Ossetia.
Specifically, the commander of the crew of the Russian supersonic
bomber Tu-22M3, which was downed during a reconnaissance mission over
South Ossetia, is on the missing list.
.Chagin wins Dakar stage for 50th time.
BUENOS AIRES, January 5 (Itar-Tass) -- Vladimir Chagin has won a stage
in the Dakar race for the 50th time on Monday making a present for his own
birthday on Tuesday. The Russian racer will turn 40.
The five-time winner of the most prestigious world race has won in the
182 kilometer-long high-speed special section for three hours 26 minutes
and 53 seconds leaving behind his teammate Firdaus Kabirov by 11 minutes
and 56 seconds. Brazilian Tatra truck pilot Andre de Azevedo came third
falling behind Vladimir Chagin by 37 minutes and eight seconds. One more
Russian truck crew piloted by Ilgizar Mardeyev held the fourth place.
After the third stage of the race Vladimir Chagin is leading in the
truck category, while Firdaus Kabirov is going second. Andre de Azevedo
occupies the third place. "This was a really hard Dakar stage: a winding
highland road and a very dusty section with the fesh-fesh (the really fine
dust that looks like solid ground but behaves like soft mud - Itar-Tass),"
spokesman for the KAMAZ-master team Erik Khairullin quoted Vladimir Chagin
as saying right after the finish. According to him, "The engine was
heating up to 95 degrees Celsius, and we even stopped at one place to cool
it down before the uphill section."
For his part, summing up the results of a difficult race stage leader
of the KAMAZ-master team Semyon Yakubov said, "Ilgizar Mardeyev
experienced the hardest difficulties: his truck is heavy, so it is more
difficult for him to drive in the sands than for other racers. Alongside,
he had more racers driving ahead of him and blocking the road sometimes."
According to him, Mardeyev showed the high skills to get out of an
enormous sand hole, where he got into overrunning a vehicle driving ahead
of him. "But unfortunately he failed to fix a navigation point over the
dust and will be fined by an hour in the race. Certainly, this will throw
him back in the overall standings, but taking into account that it is just
the third day of the race, we do not consider it as a tragic event, as
various accidents occur during the Dakar race and this is not the worst
thing," Yakubov said. "The most important thing that it is already clear
at this stage that it was one of the most difficult, all crews passed it
worthily," the KAMAZ-master leader said.
Speaking on the winner of the third stage of the race, Yakubov noted
that for Vladimir Chagin it is "the 50th victory at the Dakar stage and he
entered the top ten racers in the overall standings for the first time on
the third day of the race." Now he occupies the 9th place, all Dakar
old-timers are surprised and astonished at such result, we are happy about
Volodya, as it is a good present for his 40th birthday," the leader of the
Russian team underlined.
