Iran's grand ayatollah criticizes explosion of rumors in society

QOM, Jan. 7 (MNA) -- Grand Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi has criticized the recent explosion of rumors in society, saying rumors are like destructive bombs which cause panic in society.
“Like a bomb, rumors have a very destructive effect and rob (people of) calmness and unsettle society,” the grand ayatollah told theology students at the Grand Mosque of Qom.
“One should not make judgments about persons based on conjecture or speculation,” he stated. “And do not express views about a person until you are quite certain.”
Grand Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi gave an example, saying that in Tuesday’s newspapers, some statements about a particular person were attributed to him that were totally baseless.
“Unfortunately, in our time, making judgments based on conjecture or speculation has increased and this has even slipped into the media,” he lamented.
Rumors, lies, and unsubstantiated statements are proliferating, he added.
He went on to say that making statements based on rumors will only exacerbate the current situation in society.
He also said that the dissemination of rumors by some hypocrites, which is done with the aim of inflaming public opinion, is something which was even done to the Prophet Muhammad (S) in order to tarnish his image, and there are 18 verses of the Quran condemning rumormongering.
The rumors, which are meant to unsettle people’s nerves, are like an avalanche, which becomes larger and more dangerous as it falls down a mountain, he noted.
