MALAYSIAN PM'S WIFE EXPRESSES APPRECIATION TO EGYPT FOR RELEASING M'SIAN STUDENT
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 8 (Bernama) -- Rosmah Mansor, wife of Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, has expressed her utmost appreciation to the Egyptian President's wife, Suzanne Mubarak, who had immediately responded to enable the release of Malaysian student Ibrahim Mohd Azmi in Egypt on Tuesday.
The Prime Minister's wife said that she had contacted the Egyptian First
Lady at about 6.15pm Wednesday to inform her of the detention of the medical
student from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom and was relieved when the
student was released about four hours later.
"I had appealed to Suzanne that one of our students had been detained and as
a mother, we understand the feelings of Ibrahim's parents. No matter whoever's
child it is, if I can help or do something to ease the burden of the parents,
Insya Allah, I will discharge my responsibility.
"I had also informed (Suzanne) that the student is young and full of
emotion, he was detained for taking a photograph, and he probably was not aware
of his mistake. I fully appreciate the response given by Suzanne when she
immediately asked for the student's name and other details such as his passport
number and date of birth," she told reporters at her residence, here Thursday.
Rosmah said she also informed Suzanne that the 22-year-old Ibrahim should be
released as he had to continue his studies which were scheduled to begin
Friday.
She said Ibrahim's father, Dr Mohd Azmi Mohd Ghazali wanted his son to
concentrate on his studies as he was being sponsored by Mara.
On the medical aid and food supplies brought by the humanitarian convoy
"Viva Palestina" which were prevented from entering the Gaza Peninsula by the
Egyptian government, Rosmah said she was glad that the aid had reached the
desired destination.
In July, Rosmah had met Suzanne while attending the Summit of the First
Ladies of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) at Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, where the
Egyptian First Lady had invited Rosmah to join the international peace movement
propagated by Suzanne.
In the incident last Wednesday, more than 10 members of the Viva Palestina
convoy were injured, four of them in serious condition, and seven, including
Ibrahim, were detained by Egyptian police in a demonstration at the El-Arish
port, Egypt.
The demonstration by members of the Viva Palestina convoy were in protest of
the decision of the Egyptian government to prevent 59 vehicles in the convoy
from being taken out of the El-Arish Port to be taken to Gaza.
