Israeli president pardons Russian woman

TEL AVIV, January 8 (Itar-Tass) - Israeli President Shimon Peres has
pardoned Russian woman Izabella Belfar, 71, convicted for abetting the
illegal taking of her granddaughter out of the country. On Friday, Belfar
is expected to be released from the prison in the town of Ramla where she
is serving a sentence.
In December 2007, Izabella Belfar was sentenced to six years in jail
for abetting the illegal taking of her granddaughter Lilah out of Israel,
in violation of the resolution by the Israeli court, which had set the
custody procedure of the girl, following the divorce of her parents. Both
parents have Israeli citizenship.
In February 2008, Belfar, who was 69 at the time, was sent to prison
despite her age and the condition of health: she suffered two
cardiovascular incidents during the trial.
In August 2008, a higher court cut her prison term by half, but Belfar
appealed to the president to pardon her.
The child custody row occurred back in 2001. At that time, Belfar's
daughter Marina and granddaughter Lilah were in Israel because of the
authorities' ban to take the girl out of the country without her father's
permission.
The verdict was passed by a local court, which met the demand of
Marina's former husband and father of Lilah, as he feared he would be
unable to see his daughter.
However, Marina secured a temporary permit for herself and her
daughter to visit her sister in the United States, where she met with her
mother, Izabella Belfar, who had arrived from Russia.
Marina did not return to Israel, despite her promise, and went to
Moscow together with her daughter and mother instead.
Her former husband was looking for the women and tried to visit Lilah
in Russia twice, but all the attempts ended in a scandal and visits to a
police station, whereupon the Russian authorities banned his entry into
the country.
He complained to an Israeli court over the actions of his ex wife and
mother-in-law. In 2006, when Izabella Belfar traveled to Israel again to
visit her aged mother, she was immediately arrested and interrogated on
suspicion of child abduction, and placed under house arrest before the
trial.
