Algiers Treaty will never be abrogated: MP

TEHRAN, Jan. 9 (MNA) -- Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Chairman Alaeddin Boroujerdi has said that the 1975 Algiers Treaty between Iran and Iraq is still valid and will never be abrogated.

“The 1975 Algiers Agreement has been registered at the United Nations and is unchangeable,” he told reporters in Lorestan Province on Thursday.

The Algiers Treaty was an attempt to settle the border disputes between Iran and Iraq. In 1980, Iraq attacked Iran and declared that it no longer recognized the treaty. Recently, a number of Iraqi officials have stated that Iran should agree to abrogate the treaty.

However, according to international law, no nation can unilaterally revoke a treaty with another country.

Boroujerdi pointed out that remnants of the Baath Party are trying to undermine the security of the Iraq and undermine ties between Tehran and Baghdad.

U.S. should not hurry for release of hikers

The MP also stated out that the United States should not be in a hurry for the release of the three U.S. hikers detained in Iran.

In a violation of international law, the U.S. detained Iranian diplomats for a long time, and it should not be in a hurry for the release of its nationals, he added.

Intelligence Ministry pursuing case of riot leaders

Boroujerdi also said that the Intelligence Ministry is seriously pursuing the case of the leaders of the recent unrest in Iran.

He also emphasized that the system will seriously deal with any illegal gathering or demonstration by protestors.
