Tehran, Baghdad to discuss release of detained Iranian pilgrims

TEHRAN, Jan. 10 (MNA) -- Tehran’s ambassador to Iraq, Hasan Kazemi Qomi, announced on Saturday that the Iranian and Iraqi deputy foreign ministers will meet in Tehran in the near future to hold negotiations on the release of Iranian pilgrims held in Iraqi prisons.

Of course, every government deals with unauthorized entry into its territory, and it is normal that the Iraqi security forces have arrested some Iranian nationals who have illegally entered Iraq to visit the Shrine of Imam Hussein (AS), Qomi told the Mehr News Agency on Saturday.

“We do not approve of our compatriots’ illegal entry into Iraq, but we have asked the Iraqi government to pardon the Iranians who illegally entered (the country),” he added.

He also announced that the Iraqi foreign minister will pay a visit to Tehran next month.

Algiers Treaty is unchangeable

Qomi said the Algiers Treaty is the criterion for demarcating the border between Iran and Iraq, and it is an unchangeable treaty.

The UN-brokered Algiers Treaty was drafted in 1975 to settle the border disputes between Iran and Iraq. In 1980, Iraq, under the leadership of former dictator Saddam Hussein, attacked Iran and declared that it no longer recognized the treaty.

Recently, a misunderstanding has arisen between Iran and Iraq over the demarcation of the border in the region of the Fakka joint oil field.

According to international law, no nation can unilaterally revoke a treaty with another country, Ambassador Qomi stated.

He went on to say that Iran and Iraq have agreed to resolve the border issue based on the principles of trust, good neighborliness, and the observance of the border treaties.

The two countries have also agreed to establish a joint working group to check the border demarcations, and if necessary, improvements should be made to clarify the location of the borders, he said.

“The criterion for the demarcation is the previous agreement,” he added.

He also announced that the two countries have agreed to set up border posts that will work together.

On the issue of the joint oil fields, he said Iranian and Iraqi officials have held three meetings to discuss how to exploit these reserves.

Regional meeting over dust storms

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian diplomat said a regional meeting over dust storms is being organized.

“Iran and Iraq will also expand their bilateral cooperation on environmental issues. The two countries will work together to tackle the issue of dust storms and to implement the green belt plan,” he added.
