Russia to develop series of measures for ratification of Paris agreement - presidential advisor

MOSCOW, December 15. /TASS/. Russian presidential advisor and special envoy for climate change Alexander Bedritsky has said that Russia will develop a package of measures to prepare for the ratification of the Paris climate agreement. "I think that this (the development of new programs and strategies in Russia) will, of course, take place," he told TASS. "I believe that the first step will be the development of the set of measures to prepare for the ratification of this agreement." Bedritsky noted that the agreement contained many elements that "need to be worked out and prepared for the ratification." He recalled in particular that the member-states were to develop until 2020 their strategies of the long-term development with the low-emission level until 2050. "This will require some effort from us," he said. "These strategies must take into account the commitments defined at the national level, which have been tentatively defined here until 2030, and figure out how the situation will evolve to make sure that we move forward within the framework of the agreement." "We must prepare for developing a package of measures, look at the scenarios taking into account the changes in the global economic dynamics, the global finance dynamics, the dynamics of development and cooperation to clarify our possibilities," Bedritsky said. "With regard to Russia, the emission peak will occur in 2020. After that, there will be a 25-percent decrease in emissions compared to 1990, and by 2030 we will expect a 5-percent reduction in emissions," he added. Read more
