Top diplomat says war on Korean Peninsula would become horrible scenario

MOSCOW, September 1. /TASS/. The war would become a horrible scenario on the Korean Peninsula, and negotiations should be renewed, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday, speaking to the students and teachers of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), an academic institution run by the Russian Foreign Ministry. "US Secretary of Defense James Mattis said numerous times that military solution to this situation would cause enormous human victims," he noted. "We ask them (the Americans - TASS), ‘How? There will be victims among your allies - Japan and South Korea - in the first instance.’ They say allusively, ‘There may be situations when no other choice will be left.’" "This is an absolutely horrible scenario, so we will strive to renew these negotiations," Lavrov stressed. The situation on the Korean Peninsula remains extremely tense due to development by Pyongyang of its missile nuclear program. In July, North Korea carried out two test firings of its ballistic missiles, prompting a sharp reaction from the US, Japan and South Korea. North Korea made a new missile launch on August 29.
