Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The Minister of Environment and Green Development Ms Oyun Sanjaasuren MP has been selected as one of the 100 strongest women in the mining sector of the world.
The list has been released by the Women in Mining NGO, who selected the top from 500 nominees according to their contribution to the mining sphere of their countries.
The WIM was founded in 1972 in Denver, US Colorado, by several women whose intent was to facilitate education about the mining industry for themselves and for those not acquainted with the role the industry plays in their lives. With mining historically a male-dominated industry, these women felt their purposes could best be served via an organization composed predominantly of women.
The Civil Will Party (CWP), founded by Ms Oyun, successfully ran for the 2012 parliamentary election by proposing a policy on green development. As soon as she became the Minister of Environment and Green Development at the new cabinet, she has launched many reforms in the legal documents on environment.
Mongolia should forward a development without harming an environment, a regulation policy for it is called "Green development", says Ms Oyun. The environmental policy focuses on the renewable energy field, so the Ministry has worked out some bills against mining industry's harmful exploitation, she added.
A geologist by profession, Ms Oyun was elected the MP several times since 1998, being one of a few women parliamentarians. Apart from the green development matters, she has drawn up also a bill on combating corruption.
