NEW DELHI, March 30 (Bernama) -- At least 12 people were killed in an accident during a ritual at a temple in central India on Thursday.

About 30 people were trapped after the roof covering an old "bawdi" (stepwell) in the temple collapsed during the ritual marking the Hindu festival of Ram Navami in Indore in Madhya Pradesh state, local media reported.

One report, citing local residents, said the temple was built by putting a slab over the stepwell.

A large number of devotees had gathered to participate in the fire ritual known as "havan" when the well’s roof caved in.

"Extremely pained by the mishap in Indore," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a tweet.

Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced an ex gratia amount of half a million rupees (RM26,820) each to the families of those killed.
