JAKARTA, June 7 (Bernama) -- The ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre) will mobilise the final two batches of relief items to Myanmar on June 16 and June 22 by sea.
The humanitarian assistance to support the emergency relief efforts in Myanmar due to the severe impact of Cyclone MOCHA last month reflects the solidarity of ASEAN with their people.
The relief items comprising of non-food items, and water and sanitation hygiene kits, are expected to arrive in the country on June 20 and June 27, according to ASEAN chairman’s statement.
ASEAN’s first batch of humanitarian response arrived in Myanmar on May 21 and was among the first emergency support received by the affected communities.
The regional grouping had also begun an internal discussion on possible supports for the recovery phase based on the assessment from the ASEAN Emergency Response and Assessment (ERAT) Team.
The ASEAN-ERAT concluded their initial needs assessment in the affected areas on May 30.
As of June 2, the AHA Centre had handed over relief items for the affected communities in the townships of Sittwe, Rathedaung, KyaukTaw, and Ponnagyun.
Relief items worth US$1.64 million mobilised to Myanmar from the Disaster Emergency Logistics System for ASEAN warehouse in Subang, Malaysia.
These include non-food items such as shelter tools and kits, and water sanitation and hygiene.
