BAC awards contract for design and supervision of BD 22 million Cargo Area

Manama, Nov. 15 (BNA): Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) appointed French engineering company Egis as a consultant to provide design and supervision services for Bahrain International Airport’s new (BIA) BD22 million Cargo Area, a state-of-the-art facility that will help turn logistics and air cargo into one of Bahrain’s primary industries. Comprised of warehouses, aircraft parking and associated infrastructure, the development is in line with the objectives of the Coordinating Committee, chaired by His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
His Excellency the Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications and Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) Chairman Engineer Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed, signed the agreement alongside Egis Middle East & South Asia Aviation Director, Jacques Khoriaty during the Bahrain International Airshow (BIAS). In attendance were BAC Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Yousif Al Binfalah and other officials from both companies.
HE the Minister said: "The new Cargo Area which is being built north of the airport runway at a cost of BD22 million is an important part of the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications’ growth strategy for the aviation sector and a key component of the Airport Modernisation Programme (AMP), which is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2019. It is also a part of BAC’s ongoing work to improve the Kingdom’s aviation infrastructure in order to meet rising local and regional demands. This capacity increase will allow the airport to handle larger numbers and volumes of shipments, creating new jobs in the process. This is also in line with government-led initiatives aimed at expanding the Kingdom’s logistics sector, which began in 2015 via the Bahrain Logistics Board, chaired by His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander, and First Deputy Prime Minister, Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa."
The new Cargo Area will be equipped with the latest technology to enhance BIA’s cargo handling capabilities and better cater to express customers. BIA’s 24-hour air cargo terminal receives approximately 38,000 tonnes of air cargo annually.
