Deputy PM invites Japan’s METI to develop EEC
TOKYO, June 7 (TNA) -- Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak has invited Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) to develop the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) in Thailand through many projects including digital ones.
In the “Thailand towards Asia Hub” seminar in Tokyo on June 7, Mr Somkid said Thailand was transforming its industrial sector with innovations and without Japanese investors the EEC project that was part of the transformation efforts would not be successful.
He said that Japan’s METI could help develop airports, ports, dual track railways and infrastructures for digital economy. He thought that the development could begin either late this year or early next year.
According to Mr Somkid, Thailand plans to become a regional hub for processed foods, bioindustry, future automobiles, petrochemical products, tourism, medicine and aviation.
On the same occasion, the deputy prime minister witnessed the signing of an agreement between Thailand’s Industry Ministry and METI to promote connections between small and medium-sized enterprises of both countries.
Thai Industry Minister Uttama Savanayana said it was the first time that METI signed an agreement with Thailand and he hoped that the cooperation with METI which was experienced in connected industries would help improve Thai operators and SMEs.
Mr Somkid also witnessed the signing of a Thai-Japanese agreement to promote cooperation on innovation, digital economy and internet security. On the occasion, he invited relevant Japanese authorities to have their offices at the Digital Park in Si Racha district, Chon Buri. (TNA)
