Govt to solve egg oversupply

BANGKOK, Dec 19 (TNA) - The Commerce Minister will meet with the Egg Board to introduce measures to tackle a glut of eggs and price slump. Commerce Minister Sontirat Sontijirawong will convene a meeting with the Egg Board to find solutions for a surplus of eggs. The meeting will consider issuing the announcement to control imports of breeding stocks under the Export and Import of Goods Act BE 2522. If the announcement is issued, it will help control the number of imported roosters and hens for breeding to stay at appropriate level. For the short term solution, the ministry will urgently help small-scale egg producers by distributing their eggs to the government Blue Flag outlets, offering low-priced consumer products throughout the country to absorb incoming egg supplies. It is believed that the measure will help shore up eggs’ prices. Regarding complaints that large-scale chicken farms increase production and sell eggs at lower prices as well as contract farming, he said small scale laying hen flock raisers can lodge their complaints to the Commerce Ministry, so a trade competition committee will take the issue into its consideration. In another solution to help egg producers, the ministry allows them to sell their eggs directly to customers at selling booths of the provincial commerce offices to stimulate egg consumption. (TNA)
