GPIC's sustainability report issued

Manama, Aug. 15 (BNA): Gulf Petrochemicals Industries Company (GPIC) has released its 2016 Sustainability Report, which sets goals for achieving the United Nation’s 17 goals in ensuring a sustainable future.
Releasing the publication, Company President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery said that GPIC seeks to achieve new heights in sustainability and continues to address the most important challenges on the economic, social and environmental level. He said the objectives present clear and convincing goals that have been approved by all United Nations member states as a key driver for the future, which would unleash a wave of sustainable products, services and business innovations.
Dr. Jawahery stressed the importance of the United Nations resolution to adopt the goals and said these seek to promote growth as well as eradicate poverty and hunger in coordination with the relevant sectors and through strategies, programmes and initiatives. He also explained the importance of the fertilizer industry’s role in supporting endeavours, where it is the main source to make the soil fertile for increased agricultural yields. This is along with the other initiatives in the field of environmental conservation. He described the publication as a major step forward for the GPIC and said it includes an explanation to the company's shareholders and customers about the role that it company can play in core issues.
He stressed that the company's management has a new approach to providing sustainability reports to make it easier for those concerned to follow its progress in achieving UN objectives, as well as empowering women. He also mentioned that the report is a one-stop reference point and co-relates achievements of UN objectives and the company's performance in sustainability.
The President praised the UN Millennium Development Goals and stressed these address interrelated elements of sustainable development such as economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection as well as focusing on social agenda. He said GPIC, in the months and years ahead, will adopt the UN goals as a comprehensive framework to form a guide about the strategies, objectives and activities that allow it to take advantage of benefits such as identifying future employment opportunities and enhancing the value of corporate sustainability. In addition, it will also enhance shareholder relations, maintain the pace of policy development and stability of societies and markets as well as the use of a common language and a common goal.
He said the 17 goals will form a global agenda for development in our communities and will allow leading companies to show off their ability in supporting sustainable development issues. The President stressed on the need to set priorities and progress in achieving sustainable development goals related to businesses and said it is a sure way of ensuring a sustainable future.
GPIC is a leading producer of petrochemicals and fertilizers and has taken the initiative towards the integration of the sustainable development goals in its work strategy. The third such report by the GPIC has been titled, "Leadership, Innovation Collaboration" in line with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) framework.
Dr. Jawahery said the official implementation of the sustainable development goals has been set for 2030. He hopes that member countries, working over the next 15 years, would mobilize efforts to eradicate poverty in all its forms, fight inequality and tackle climate change.
