Indonesia to import more red onions from Thailand
BANGKOK, May 1 (TNA) - Indonesia has finally lifted its import restriction on red onions from Thailand, boosting demand and market price of the commodity.
Thailand’s Agricultural Economics Office said the price of red onions stood at 22 baht per kilogram on average in April, rising by 40.4% from March this year. In April, Thailand exported about 100 containers of red onions to Indonesia, pushing up the price of dried red onions to 28 baht per kilogram.
However, the trade office warned of risks in Thailand’s red onion export market, namely companies that try to increase their profit margin by substituting lower-quality onions from Vietnam when exporting to Indonesia, saying quality dissatisfaction could hurt Thai exporters in the future. (TNA)
