Kahramaa Signs Seawater Desalination MoU with Japanese Organization

Tokyo, October 19 (QNA) - Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) signed Thursday in Tokyo a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization of Japan (NEDO) on the pilot project for the advanced seawater desalination system applying heated discharge water. The MoU was signed by Kahramaa President Eng. Essa bin Hilal Al Kuwari and NEDO President Akihiko Miyamoto in the attendance of HE Minister of Energy and Industry Dr. Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada and top officials from the Qatari and Japanese side. The project, implemented in Ras Laffan Industrial City, aims to achieve energy efficiency and protect the environment in that industrial city. The project capacity is 1500 m3/day of potable water. The project includes planning, design, equipment manufacturing, training, and use of the technology across the country. During the project, NEDO will entrust its work to Mitsubishi Heavy Technology Industries Ltd. and Mitsubishi Corporation. Kahramaa will carry its work in cooperation with Mitsubishi Corporation Water Technology Center established by Mitsubishi Corporation in Qatar. In this advanced seawater desalination technologies, discharged seawater used as cooling water for power planets, chemical plants, and other heavy industrial plants will be utilized from the intake of raw seawater desalination plants with advanced technologies developed by Japanese companies. An environmentally friend bio-enhanced pretreatment will be applied. An advanced reverse osmosis (RO) membrane is heat resistance to remain stable with high temperature seawater. In addition to reduce construction, operation and maintenance costs, energy saving is expected through use of advanced processes. Energy consumption is expected to be reduces by more than 80% compared to the conventional thermal desalination process. The environmental impact will be less. The MoU promotes partnership between Kahramaa and Japanese corporation. It allows mutual expertise exchange and human resources development. It comes within Kahramaa endeavor to make use of the new technologies of seawater desalination. Kahramaa has the right to utilize the technology and take part in the ownership of the intellectual property of the new technology. Kahramaa works to develop water production capacity and meet the increasing demand for water while committing to environment protection as per its mission of providing high quality and sustainable electricity and water for better living in Qatar. Kahramaa is witnessing tremendous growth in facilities related to the water sector. It is implementing a number of projects to upgrade the strategic water reserves and secure them to various areas in the country through strategic tanks, pumping stations and transmission lines. This will contribute to improving water security and the quality of services provided by the corporation which falls in line with the growing demand for electricity and water witnessed by the State of Qatar on these two vital commodities in light of the comprehensive renaissance in the country.
