Myanmar, Thailand ink joint venture deal on Dawei SEZ

BANGKOK, December 14 (TNA) - Myanmar and Thailand have held their Fifth Joint High-Level Committee (JHC) Meeting in Bangkok and signed a deal, after Japan has agreed to co-invest in the Dawei Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Project in Myanmar. Warotai Kosolpisitkul, Deputy Director-General of the Fiscal Policy Office (FPO), under the Thai Ministry of Finance, told journalists that Monday's 5th JHC Meeting was following up progress in the development of the Dawei SEZ and related areas, while the use of the Thai baht and the Myanmar kyat currencies in the Dawai SEZ was also set for a discussion. Warotai said Japan’s co-investment is in the form of a special purpose vehicle (SPV) in the Dawei SEZ Project, the agreement of which was set to be signed by December 14, covering Japanese roles in technical support. According to the senior Thai official, the Dawei SEZ Project covers a deep-sea port, a road from Dawei to the Thai border in Ban Phu Namron area of the western Kanchanaburi Province, an industrial estate, a power supply system, a water supply and a wastewater treatment system, a telecommunications system and a railway system.
