QC's Arbitration Center Settles 10 Cases Worth QR466 billion in 2018

Doha, February 25 (QNA) - QICCA board member for International Relations HE Sheikh Dr Thani bin Ali Al-Thani said that the Qatar International Center for Conciliation and Arbitration (QICCA), of Qatar Chamber (QC), settled ten commercial disputes worth QR466 billion of the 22 applications received by the center during 2018. His Excellency added in a press statement on Monday that these arbitration cases included disputes related to contracts of construction, commercial agencies, insurance, communication, engineering, real estate, purchases, import, and finances. He noted that QICCA maintains a list of qualified arbitrators including 280 persons, of then 129 Qatari arbitrators and the rest are from GCC, Arab and foreign countries. He said that the center seeks universality and to be one of the most important permanent arbitration institutions sought by businessmen to resolve their trade disputes. The center also seeks to spread the culture of arbitration among lawmen, businessmen and professionals at the local and international levels through holding conferences, seminars, training courses and workshops, and preparing a national elite of arbitrators and experts in international commercial arbitration. He pointed out that last year witnessed the renewal of the cooperation agreement between the center and the Qatar University's Continuing Education Center in order to enhance cooperation in the field of arbitration, the provision of arbitration courses, training program rehabilitation, preparation of arbitrators and the importance of arbitration in resolving disputes. He pointed out that the center has signed many MoUs with many institutions to strengthen cooperation including MoU with Istanbul Arbitration Centre. In 2018, the center held, in cooperation with Qatar University's Continuing Education Center, training courses in the qualification and preparation of arbitrators program, as well as training programs in various fields such as anti- money laundering, setting up companies and commercial agencies, and arbitration in engineering contracts. His Excellency also noted that QICCA has provided trainings for students of College of Law at Qatar University, where they were trained in all its departments to become familiar with the services provided by the center, and follow the progress of arbitral proceedings in the cases before it, as well as attend hearings after the permission of both the arbitral tribunal and the parties to the dispute. Last year, QICCA held 9 seminars including "Integrated Suite of Contracts, Key Features of the Sudanese Arbitration Law and its Judicial Applications, Qualities and Ethics of Arbitrator, Legal Aspects of Investment in the State of Qatar, Characteristics of Arbitration and Condition and Involvement under the Qatari Arbitration Law, Arbitration of Maritime and Engineering Disputes, Extension of Time in Construction Projects, Project Management and Construction Contracts." In addition, QICCA participated in eight local and international seminars and conferences. (QNA)
