QR codes for durian from Rayong

BANGKOK, April 20 (TNA) -- The agricultural office in the eastern province of Rayong plans to introduce QR codes for local durian fruits to permit traceability. Surasing Poompermsuksombat, agricultural chief of Rayong, said QR code labels would be introduced within the present crop season for local durian fruits to ensure their quality. Such labels will be attached to stalks. The codes will lead consumers to the profiles including pictures of growers, their orchards and traders. Mr Surasing also said his office was improving devices to check carbohydrate content in durian fruits without having to cut a fruit sample from its tree. The devices would be similar to laser speed guns, he said. According to him, local officials are strictly checking the quality of durian in Rayong and suppressing vendors who may try to sell unripe durian to consumers. Durian in Rayong is priced at about 100 baht per kilogram and the yield of the present crop will peak in May. (TNA)
