Solutions under way for soft ground of Suvarnabhumi airport

BANGKOK, May 11 (TNA) -- The management of Suvarnabhumi airport has assured that it has comprehensive solutions to address soft ground problems at the main airport of the country. Col Kamol Wongsomboon, deputy director of Suvarnabhumi airport, described the solutions in response to a safety warning from the International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations about soft spots on taxiways and taxilanes at the airport. The management had immediate, medium-term and long-term solutions to the problem, he said. Immediate solutions involve officials being put on standby around the clock to conduct quick repair once being informed of any damage. Medium-term solutions concern the improvement of asphaltic layers to meet safety standard. The repair has taken place since last year on Taxiways G and C and Taxilanes T8 and T12. For long-term solutions, the management will replace the tarmac areas with Portland cement concrete. It was designing the construction, Col Kamol said. Cracks and emergency repair could delay flights but their numbers were declining, he said. (TNA)
